Join us this Lent, beginning Thursday, March 6th at 12pm, as we journey towards Holy Week by exploring the theme of spiritual disciplines through our series called ‘Taking it up’. Last year we had a really successful series called ‘Giving it up’, but this year we are giving that theme a twist.
Each Thursday lunchtime for 6 weeks (ending on April 10th), at our regular midweek communion service from 12pm-12.30pm, we will have a guest preacher who will give a homily (brief sermon) on a particular spiritual discipline such as prayer, fasting or repentance. We will consider what it means to take up each of these disciplines, and in doing so, take up our cross and follow Jesus.
Mar 6: Fasting When you fast (Isaiah 58:1-14 / Matt. 6:16-18) – Dr. Andrew Alwine
Mar 13: Scripture Man cannot live by bread alone – The Very Rev. Peet Dickinson
Mar 20: Repentance For this is the will of God – The Right Rev. Mark Lawrence
Mar 27: Prayer When you pray – Matt Lambert
Apr 3: Almsgiving Do not let your left hand know – The Rev. David Adams
Apr 10: Hospitality As you did it to one of the least of these – Shawn Maze (Sanctuary Church)
The service will be followed each week by a tasty soup lunch in the Wellbrock Hall.
So why not consider taking a break from work, school or family life, and heading to the Cathedral for some spiritual, mental and physical nourishment!
All are welcome, and childcare is available from 11.45am-12.45pm. More details on speakers and topics to follow.
