lent_season_title_stillThere are a number of great offerings during the Season of Lent* at the Cathedral. Please consider taking up one, two or all of these as a part of your Lenten disciplines.

We will also have free Lenten devotionals available as of Sunday, February 15, written by students at Trinity Seminary. Please pick one up at church.

What’s going on?

February 18, 7am, 12pm, 6pm: Ash Wednesday Services

Join us for one of three brief services with the imposition of ashes. This is a very moving way to begin Lent, and a reminder that we dust, and to dust we shall return.

Thursdays @ 12pm, February 19 – March 26: Lenten Lunch Series

This Lent, every Thursday at noon (Feb 18-Mar 26), we will journey towards Holy Week by exploring the theme of prayer. Each week at our midweek communion service from 12pm-12.30pm, we will have a guest preacher who will give a homily (brief sermon) on a particular aspect the Prayers of the People.

The service will be followed each week by a tasty soup lunch in the Wellbrock Hall. All are welcome, and childcare is available. “Being the heart of God for the heart of Charleston”

Sundays @ 9pm, February 22 – March 29: Compline

Every Sunday in Lent, we will end the weekend with this beautiful ancient service of Compline: “a service of evening prayers forming part of the Divine Office of the Western Christian Church, traditionally said (or chanted) before retiring for the night.” About 20 minutes long, this service is a reflective and peaceful candlelit service, and a helpful way to begin your week.

Soaking Prayer: Wednesdays Mar 4, 11, 18, 7-8pm

The Cathedral Women’s Ministry will be offering the chance for men and women to come and spend time in prayer in the Cathedral. You can be prayed for by trained members of the Cathedral, or you can just enjoy the God’s presence among us as music is played in our beautiful worship space.

Also offered elsewhere in our Diocese:

Saturday, February 21, 9am-1pm: Lenten Quiet Day @ Old St Andrews, West Ashley

This quiet day for women will feature local speaker Joanne Ellison, the founder of national non-profit Drawing Near to God based in Mount Pleasant, SC. Joanne’s goal is to help women navigate their way around the distractions of life and into the presence of God. There is no cost, but please RSVP to the Old St Andrews Office (843-766-1541) if you plan to attend.

*What is Lent?
Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). It is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ – his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection.
