Jesus proclaims this passage as he reads from the Book of Isaiah (see Isaiah 61:1-4) in his hometown synagogue in Nazareth after he returns from his filling with the Holy Spirit at his baptism in the Jordan River and time in the wilderness. Here, he announces his mission – and the mission of the Body of Christ! The gospels record his practice: “Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction” (Matthew 9:35). As his disciples, we are called to do what he did: teach and proclaim Good News and to heal.
The Cathedral of St. Luke & St. Paul offers this ministry of healing prayer in various settings:
– during Holy Communion as part of our regular worship
– in personal appointments for prayer ministry
– at our Nights of Prayer & Worship (first Sundays at 6:00pm)
– as part of days of healing prayer, training events, and seasonal retreats
– and in our community groups as we pray for and with one another
